Advent Puzzle 19 Solved! Grand Challenge Clue half unlocked! (Challenge 21 will unlock the rest)

Lady Vaduva approached Pinkerton's room, a small envelope in her hands. She knocked and wait, then entered after enough time had passed for the Chairman to have checked who was knocking and get back to his chair before called 'Enter!'

'Ah, hello, Dear lady, what can I do for you- or the treasury today?' Pinkerton smiled. Lady Vaduva pushed the door shut, used to the Chairman's wily way to avoid trouble, and put the envelope down in front of him. 'It's time, Chairman.'

Pinkerton glanced at the envelope and winced. 'Oh, come now, it's not even the new year yet-' he began. '-surely we don't-'

Lady Vaduva looked him firmly in the face, narrowing her eyes. 'Yes. because it took a month for you to complete it the last time.'

Pinkerton's face twitched. 'But there's good reason for that! It takes time to check each rule-'

Lady Vaduva leaned forwards, opening the envelope and spreading out the paper within, not looking at it, pointing a finger at the bottom.

'Just sign. It's the same as it was last year, and the year before that, rules and regulations of the society. It's not like we've changed them in years!'

Pinkerton frowned at her. 'But you do have to consider that sometimes adjustments need to be made - if we got another complaint about-'

'We haven't had a complaint in years- at least, that the rules and regulations would've stopped. No one reads them anyway!'

Pinkerton grumbled and looked down at them. Then blinked.

'I think you might want to read this one,' He said levelly.

Lady Vaduva looked down, surprised by the sudden change of tone. There, at the bottom, a small addendum was affixed to the rules and regulations. 'Challenge 19: Renowned Explorers: International Society's Challenge'.

She sighed. 'If I find out that you set this up just to avoid looking at these again...' she warned, glaring at Pinkerton. He shook his head, though she could see a gleam in his eyes that suggested that he would've if he'd thought of it. She vowed to herself to make absolutely certain
no one especially Pinkerton could get their hands on the main copy of this next year, and left his office to take it to the Hall for the Explorers to examine.

Puzzle: This Explorer's rule ensures that the Society works together - but some think it foul play!

The Community successfully completed the puzzle and unlocked this half of the Grand Challenge Clue:

Looks like this half of the Grand Puzzle challenge is unlocked, so here's a brief update:

The Explorers had all tagged their solution to the puzzle up, much as they had with the others. They'd expected the usual cryptic reply in the mail, as most of the others had come, but this time, it was something a little different.

They became aware of the sound of an approaching brass band, much to their surprise. Now, this had happened before, but before, the band had been ordered by someone. Everyone looked at Pedrinho, but he shrugged. 'Not me! A little music does help lighten the mood though!'

They opened the door as the band approached, all smartly-dressed, led by an enthusiastic trumpeter, all playing merrily to a marching tune. The filed in, one at a time, and when they were all in, they lined up smartly, halted in their tune, and the trumpeter saluted the Explorers.

'Good day! We have here, a delivery for the Renowned Explorer's International Society from-' He paused and checked a paper. '-from their mystery challenger!' He announced, then, tucking his trumpet under one arm, pulled forth a small box and lifted it high so all could see it before placing it on the ground in front of the Explorers before once more raising his trumpet and leading the band out once more from where they had come.

The Explorers were a little dazed by this strange performance, but Victor looked round, then appraoched the box. Using his rapier, he expertly cut slits in the wrappings, and, with a flourish, flipped the lid open to suit the drama of the occassion.

Within, lay a small, conical object made of brass, various letters and numbers visible all along it.

'What does it say?' asked Hildegard of the others.

Anna frowned. 'It looks like a code-box.' She looked round at the blank faces. 'People use them to send coded messages. Problem is- we need the encryption to unlock the message.'
