Challenge #105: War & Peace
Author: Welsh Dragon
Contributions from: Claufi, Noctua Spell, Flamestalker, BlackVision

Story:

It was a crisp winter morning, and Victor was taking a stroll. Though the streets of London would always pale in comparison to the beautiful boulevards of Paris, he was quite enjoying himself, and looking forward to a stop at his favourite boulangerie to enjoy a little taste of home. It was surprisingly difficult to get a good croissant in London.

Suddenly, Victor saw something that stopped him in his tracks. Kiwi and Hildegard, who had been following right behind him all morning, couldn't help but crash into the Frenchman. Going out for a stroll wasn't really their idea of fun (too slow for Kiwi, too cold for Hildegard,) but once they heard there would be cake, Victor had found it impossible to shake them... and believe me, he'd tried.

“Hey!” Kiwi shouted, landing on her backside with a bump.

“Why are we stopping? Are we there?” Asked Hildegard, picking up her hat from where it had fallen on the ground. Thankfully there was no harm done, as Mr Snuffles hadn't been riding inside it this morning. Emilia was bunny-sitting.

But Victor seemed completely oblivious to the little kerfuffle he'd caused. He just stared across the road like he couldn't believe his eyes.

“Do you not know who zat is?” He said, reluctantly tearing his eyes away from the figure he'd spotted leaving a hotel, to look upon the two young explorers.

Kiwi and Hildegard stared back blankly.

“Zat is Ambassador General Warren Peace 'imself!” Victor said, as if that answered everything.

“Never heard of him,” said Kiwi, losing interest already as this was delaying their cake.

“Mon Dieu.” Victor said, palming his face in frustration. “Monsieur Peace is one of zee finest military minds and diplomats in 'istory. His battlefield tactics are required reading at zee École Spéciale Militaire de Saint-Cyr, Sandhurst and Westpoint Military Academies. He single handedly negotiated both the Syldavia-Borduria Treaty and the Ruritania Accords... Surely you 'ave heard of him?”

“Nope.” Said Hildegard. “ Sorry.”

“Sacrebleu.” Victor was clearly quite annoyed. “He has been a personal hero of mine since I first learned to use a sword. To be able to discuss battlefield tactics and negotiating strategies with him for just a few minutes would be très extraordinaire.”

“Well, let's go say hi.” Said Kiwi, taking a step towards the hotel.

“NON!” Victor sounded truly shocked. “One does not simply walk up to a man such as zis and say 'hi.'”

“However...” the Frenchman added, a plan coming together. “If Pinkerton could be persuaded to invite Monsieur Peace to present the award at this years ceremony. And if I... er we, could do something truly worthy of the great man's attention... then perhaps...?”

“Oui.” Victor said, suddenly sounding very pleased with himself. “Come, we must speak with Pinkerton and then prepare for our expedition. But we must hurry. I am sure once ze news of Monsieur Peace's attendance gets out, many in the Society will wish to impress him. We must defeat them all!”

Hildegard and Kiwi looked at each other, slightly unnerved by Victor's sudden change of mood. But it sounded like it would be quite an adventure, and it might be fun.

“Just one thing...” Kiwi began, before Hildegard finished the thought they had both been having.

“...will there be cake?”
