Retro Reus showcase

Post by Ronnie » Thu Oct 10, 2013 5:24 pm

Hello everyone!
By now you must've seen the Retro Reus showcase video; a pixelly presentation of your favourite giants!
If you haven't yet, check it out right here and now:
We have Joni, our music guy, to thank for this. It was his idea to make a chiptune theme from Reus
and he asked me to make some retro, pixel graphics for it. Sadly I was making ideas way out of my league,
I'd made an entire script for about 3/4 minutes of animation, it'd be a condensed version of a Reus playthough.
But alas, I wasn't able to produce and composite the background elements, and that put the project on hold
for several months. I did complete the sprites for the giants themselves within 2 weeks.
I started on those about one week prior to the release of Reus,
so that should give you some insight on how long
the project's been in limbo.

But about a week ago, I had built up enough willpower to get this thing over with, and with it decided to take
it in a new direction. It was clear I wasn't going to finish the sprites elements for the cities/humans/war,
so I used what I had finished, which was the giants, so it became a sort of movelist showcase.
This mock-up screenshot should give you an idea on how my original idea was going to look like.
And tell me, doesn't that screenshot just scream: "play me! I'm Retro Reus!" I would so play that game!
Especially if it'd come with a complete chiptune remixed soundtrack by Joni!

As a special present, I hereby share you the spritesheet I made for it.
It's quite huge and not really suitable to be displayed in full-size here, so I'll post just the link:

vvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvvv ... -406342522

If anybody has interest in making more assets or using it in some way or another, feel free to,
just don't forget to credit me, the spriter, properly!

On the subject, would anyone have any suggestions on further use of these sprites?
They could be used as icons in the Reus Wiki, for instance.
Or they just might see the light of day in game-format.

Thanks for your attention and I hope you enjoyed it!

Those are some nice sprites indeed :)
It could be use to make some "animated" stories between the giants.

It is sad that the earthquake is only one sided with the dust though :P. And the forest giant breathe so fast !
I like how the symbiosis feels like a merger between the sources.

I'm glad you do, Maarten, at least then it wasn't a total waste!
