And so the walls of the mighty capital, that were said to be impenetrable and high enough to touch the heavens, fell to the might of this powerful 'black powder'.
Bia put the book down thoughtfully on the table in front of her. It truly was an inspiring and at the some time sobering historical record of a time in which gunpowder had not yet been common.
Empires governed by those specialised in bureaucracy and matters of the state. Generals leading their armies into war, helped along with information gathered using spies. Knowledge is power after all. It's easy to lay traps if you know exactly where to put them and for how many. In addition, the weapons involved were ever evolving.
Bia herself had always been focused on tactics and wits herself, but even she couldn't deny that if she had been the general defending that capital she would have stumped by the sudden emergence of these powerful explosives.
"Oh, reading up on some literature?" Victor commented as he passed by the reading room. Bia nodded. Victor walked up to the table and picked up the book.
"Interesting choice. I found it humbling myself. What did you think about it?" He asked as he pulled up a chair for himself.
"The defending general underestimated his opponent. He believed the walls to be impenetrable and did not bother looking further than his nose. However, his opponent had been developing both their nation's economy and their technology. As a result, they had the funds, resources and means to topple the enemy's army and in the end, their 'impenetrable' capital."
Victor smiled. "I see you gave this some thought. Indeed, the path to victory is not merely through superior tactics. Without the black powder the walls would have withstood them, however they might still have been able to open the gates using spies or other means. I'd say there are multiple routes to success. One of which will always be diplomacy in my eyes."
Bia drew up an eyebrow: "And yet you've chosen to study tactics as well."
"As I said, there's many routes, but one has to be prepared to fight if one wants peace."
"But that doesn't make sense!" Yelled out a girlish voice from the doorway. Bia and Victor both turned towards the voice.
"If you truly believe in diplomacy you wouldn't want to be prepared to use violence! That will only instill distrust in people! Why are you gearing up to fight if you want peace!" Hildegard argued annoyed.
"And here I thought I would go and read in peace for once." Hatice pouted while entering the room. "But I think they do have a point, Hildegard. Though I think it's good there's people like you who truly believe in a peaceful world without violence." She remarked kindly.
Victor curled his mustache and nodded. "There's many paths to victory and not everyone will walk the same paths. Isn't that what makes life interesting and diverse?"
