#Challenge #34: For Science!

Now that the society finally doesn't have to lay low anymore, it's time for some world-view-shattering expeditions. Welcome to challenge #34!

The Story
The main hall was full of explorers. They all wanted to be here for this moment. On the inside balcony a small door opened and gazes went up. Chairman Pinkerton stepped out full of energy and with a big smile. "Explorers, it's good to be back!". Then the crowd burst out in a loud cheer. After a while and gesture from Pinkerton the Renowned Explorers slowly quieted down. "Now, while I appreciate Lady Vaduva's efforts to restore the image of the Society after my period of... fast decisions, I think it's high time for excellence again. It's clear that the world is stagnating and needs discovery, scientific discovery to be specific. Now I want to encourage the Scientists in the room to take the lead and make full use of your fellow explorers skills!" Agatha stood silently to the side of the hall, muttering. "I can't believe it.. He's totally ignoring my brilliant mediocre discoveries of late! Pfff, let the man have his fancy plans, I won't join!" She walked out of the room as her colleagues were already planning their new campaigns.


The Rules
- Your captain needs to be a scientist
- Agatha can't be your captain.
- Your other 2 crewmembers are non-scientists of the same class (i.e. 2 Fighters or 2 Scouts or 2 Speakers)

- Your score is your Renown.
- Play on Adventure Mode.
- Play on any Difficulty.

The Goals
BRONZE: 2,000 Renown (1 Medal Points*)
SILVER: 4,000 Renown (2 MP*)
GOLD: 7,000 Renown (3 MP*)
PLATINUM: 11,000 Renown**
* Number of medal points awarded when playing on Classic Difficulty. Easy and Normal give less, according to these rules.
** The platinum medal is extraordinary and can only be achieved on Classic or Impossible difficulty without losing. It doesn't increase Medal Points, but we will track how many you have.

STORY MEDAL: What's the hot scientific lead of the day? What world-view-shattering discovery will the crew make? What's the dynamic between the captain and the 2 non scientists who share their class? How does the world respond to the International Society going for excellence again?

We're keeping track of all the medals you gained in the Hall of Fame.

How to participate
You can participate with a highscore, a story or both.

Stories

• Write a story. Use the Challenge theme as an inspiration by looking at the constraints. Find other stories in the Fan Story directory or by looking at previous challenges.
• Post your story in a new topic in these forums.
• Link to it here with a comment.
• Include the first paragraph/few lines of your story in the post to show readers what your story is about.

Highscores

• Play the game according to the challenge rules.
• Post a screenshot of your Win screen (that is the screen right after the win ceremony) in this topic.*
• Submit by Wednesday, July 27th, 15:00 noon CEST / 05:00 CT. (Check your timezone here)

*If you forget to screenshot the Win screen, you can also enter with a screenshot of your Leaderboards: Go to Main Menu > Leaderboards > Local > click the entry that matches your submission game > screenshot those details.

Interesting challenge. 11k is going to be hard after all the nerfs in the latest patch. Captain Anna for everyone? :))

I have just tried composing a team and there are not many study-related campfire cards outside of scientists. Maybe Ivan and Victor but Ivan's friendly attitude requirement for +1 Encounter token is going to be difficult. Earl is probably good for high score too, much easier to make up a gold focus team for him. Philippe is probably most difficult, trying not to lose any resolve. With Emilia, could be fun trying to get 2 Discovery at Beijing, insight spending is taken care of too. Status team seems out of the question, so getting Beijing is a problem too.

I think I'll be taking Earl for a spin. I mean, nobody said anything about focusing on Science, right?

It's too bad discoveries from insight don't count for his story, or we'd have our path cut out for us.

I have decided on Anna, Kiwi, Molly. Based on expeditions' perks requirements. I don't like to stack perks. Maybe Molly as insight spender at Timbuktu and see if I can get Will'o the Wisp and get Anna to teach Molly Engineer perks...

I'm planning to go Phillipe/Maria/Kwame, going for secret report build - Phillipe's trait should help with the sometimes low science from Hungarian allowing for an easy psych into anthro.

And if that fails, go Earl with Harry/Hatice.

And if that fails, screw it Anna with anything.

The post for Challenge #34 on Steam has 'patch #18 or higher' as a rule....I don't see that here but as a gog.com player of the game I also don't know how to tell which patch I have installed...only Build number.

I also see that all the patches on gog.com are gone and there's only full build files available to download. I'm worried that if I download and install one of these all my unlocked captains and campfire cards will disappear. Is that a legitimate worry? I have every captain and campfire story unlocked so that would be sad indeed.

adambomb, I deleted that line because Patch #18 wasn't online for GOG when the challenge started. Now it is under build #380, although I think it might need a hotfix for Shangri-La which is heading their way and will hopefully arrive online tomorrow, otherwise next week.

In the meanwhile, feel free to play with your current build here!

Also, applying patches shouldn't affect your save data at all. It's located in a different folder. If you want to be really safe when applying build #381 (the upcoming hotfix) you can always copy your data folder. For Steam this is harder (because cloud saving dictates your save folder management) but with the GOG build I think this approach works.

The build number is recorded in the patch notes on the steam community forum here: in this case, patch #18 is Build #376 or higher.

Thanks for the information Manuel! Sorry to be hijacking the thread w/ discussion about this but I don't see any incremental patches on gog.com anymore...only full builds. So downloading and installing the full build of the base game and MTE will leave my save files intact?

I am on gog and it has already updated to build 380. In gog galaxy, you can try: MORE -> Manage Installation -> Verify/Repair. It may force the patch download/update.
