Challenge #36: Paper Pressure

Post by Manuel » Wed Aug 03, 2016 5:32 pm

For this week we experiment with a mix and match challenge, hope you'll all have fun!

The Story
Hildegard walked down one of the small but majestic corridors of the Society when she saw Yvonne's puzzled face. "Hey Yvonne! Are you thinking of one of my magic tricks?". She faced Hildegard "Sorry Hildegard, your acts don't impress me much. It's just that today already TWO journalists passed me, without even as much as looking at me. Look, here comes another." A flashy reporter stepped quickly through the hall, obviously on her way to be first to the latest. In the process she completely ignored both Yvonne and Hildegard. "How can they afford to miss out on my most recent achievements?!"

While the slightly offended Hildegard tried to talk Yvonne of off her high horse, Pinkerton's office opened, where all the journalists had one by one entered and left. The chairman came out and told the two curious explorers what was happening. "The London Times, The Thames Times, and the Explorer's Finest all decided they want a custom exploration story to compete in some award. We can't let any of them down, so I'm afraid this poses a particular kind of pressure on our expeditions." The chairman looked at Hildegard. "Also I'm afraid all featured explorers need to be at least 18 years of age...". Pinkerton hadn't fully anticipated Hildegard's emotions and when the tears began to flow, he quickly looked at Yvonne. Finding no help there he panicked slightly. "Ah Kwame, so good to see you, why don't you come over here for a second!"

The Rules
- Pick a combination of the following constraints. The number of constraints and score determine your medal.
1. Your captain is Molly, Harry or Victor.
2. Complete at least 3 full Research trees. (Don't forget an extra screenshot for this one)
3. Visit both the Hungarian Fort and the Highlands (in any order).
4. All crewmembers are of the same class.
- Each crew-member has to be at least 18 years old :'(

- Play on Adventure Mode.
- Play on any Difficulty.
- Your game has to be played on Patch #18 or later

The Goals
BRONZE: 2,000 Renown, at least 1 constraints (1 Medal Points*)
SILVER: 5,000 Renown, at least 2 constraints (2 MP*)
GOLD: 6,000 Renown, at least 3 constraints (3 MP*)
PLATINUM**: 9,000 Renown, at least 3 constraints
* Number of medal points awarded when playing on Classic Difficulty. Easy and Normal give less, according to these rules.
** The platinum medal is extraordinary and can only be achieved on Classic or Impossible difficulty without losing. It doesn't increase Medal Points, but we will track how many you have.

STORY MEDAL: Is there a crew that can make it into all the newspapers features? Or is the pressure of the media too large? How will Hildegard deal with her disappointment?

We're keeping track of all the medals you gained in the Hall of Fame.

How to participate
You can participate with a highscore, a story or both.

Stories
  • Write a story. Use the Challenge theme as an inspiration by looking at the constraints. Find other stories in the Fan Story directory or by looking at previous challenges.
  • Post your story in a new topic in these forums.
  • Link to it here with a comment.
  • Include the first paragraph/few lines of your story in the post to show readers what your story is about.
Highscores
  • Play the game according to the challenge rules.
  • Post a screenshot of your Win screen (that is the screen right after the win ceremony) in this topic.*
  • If you pick the research tree constraint, don't forget to add a screenshot of your completed trees.
  • Submit by Wednesday, August 10th, 12:00 noon CEST / 05:00 CT. (Check your timezone here)
*If you forget to screenshot the Win screen, you can also enter with a screenshot of your Leaderboards: Go to Main Menu > Leaderboards > Local > click the entry that matches your submission game > screenshot those details.

Had an incredible streak of bad luck on this one, so I'll have to try again later. Barely missed out on filling the third research tree, and then missed a 93% roll on the one essential Shambala Key. Couldn't make a dent in Rivaleux and Amir's spirit with them being resistant to everything I could do. :(

My finally-completed game intended for Challenge 34 should qualify for Bronze in Challenge 36. I should have thought to reroute to Hungary and Highlands when I started playing again this past week, but I didn't. :p Pretty sure I won't have the time or energy to play a new game for this challenge, so I'll post this one now.

About what I figured I'd get. Andes were very rainbow-unfriendly with so few skill rolls. I suspect the map was designed with that in mind. New Lost Island was interesting, much less time to explore and rack up tokens and treasures. This was my first encounter with Darwin - is he supposed to get multiple debuffs? I did the dialog options of Origin of Species 2, say something mean because I'm devious, and the basic human progress line, but all he got was a single very minor debuff (something I forget, with (1) after it implying there could be more). I'm not sure if that's working as intended.

For future reference, can one have multiple Adventure mode games active concurrently? I wasn't sure if starting a fresh game for this challenge would overwrite my incomplete Challenge 34 game or not. Also, feature request - it would be nice if one could downgrade an Adventure mode game in progress to Discovery mode. :) Since I wasn't able to finish this one for Challenge 34, it might have been nice to reduce it to Discovery and compare doing Lost Island to Mali for the final expedition. Probably too much work to implement for the minor situational benefit though.

Only your last game is opened when you use the 'continue' button, but you are able to load every single adventure mode game through 'load game'. They are saved automatically.

Darwin's debuffs increase with the amount of replies you've given him. If I remember correctly, one is unlocked in Egypt, and another requires a mean party member. I've only ever seen it reach (2) though.

It can go up to (3). There's 2 more you didn't mention: having a level 6 Naturalist and having a level 6 Rogue.

Edit: Whilst I remember, 1 blue option does not equal 1 debuff stack. Each of the various options give X points, and when you break a set amount you get 1 stack of his debuff. I don't know exactly which options are worth the most, at a guess the level 6 skill ones are.

Ah, thanks! My only level 6 skill was Engineer. Rogue levels were particularly hard to come by in that game - it took the poker deck just to get to 4 for the token bonus from the Stockholm rogue specialist. Level 6 Naturalist might barely have been doable if I'd done several things differently. I'll keep that in mind for next time I visit Darwin!

Not to be negative but I don't see how this run qualifies for this particular challenge as, as far as I can tell, you only met one of the 4 conditions...getting 3 research trees.

EDIT - Nevermind! lol I now see that Bronze only requires 1 condition be met. Carry on :)

I did another run, going all Fighters this time... slightly higher score, same medal.

Conditions:
1) Victor as captain
2) Crew all same class
3) 3 research trees

I ran out of supplies with only half of Shangri-La explored and had 2 hunger de-buffs already. Only had a medium amount of Renown so instead of taking the risk of further exploration I just went to the boss fight. In hindsight I feel like, if I'd been a bit braver and explored more, I may have scored the extra 1500 renown needed for my 1st Platinum...but really it's all just conjecture and Platinum-level scores continue to elude me....maybe one day!

All the results are here, including some nice stats on how many people picked which constraints.
