Challenge #43: International Day of Peace

Post by Manuel » Thu Sep 22, 2016 1:24 am

Challenge #43 is inspired by the International Day of Peace, which was this Wednesday, September 21st. It's a nice fit for Renowned Explorers as neither violence nor pacifism is forced in this game. This means that the use of violence is always a conscious choice by you, the player. For this challenge I ask you to choose peace with a crew that's naturally violent. It will be the hard way.

The Story

"OUTRAGE!!!"

Jan-Piet's booming voice sounded through the halls of the Society, followed by an echoing roar, obviously Dolores. Pinkerton had assembled many of the strongest fighters among the Explorers in his office. This is where he had told them about the International Peace Day, and that the Society would observe it by not using any violence on their current expeditions. While Pinkerton tried to keep Dolores from breaking a precious globe, Molly started a steady but intense stream of curse words, for which he would normally ban her from the club for at least a month. But the chairman understood these explorers' emotions. They had joined the Society, or were even asked to do so, to do great things with their talents. These fine people's talents just happened to be hitting people on the head, and for a large part that was very important, but this time it had to be different.

"Dear Explorers, I know I my advice is always to play your strengths, in all your cases quite literally, but please remain aware of the fact that violence always has a loser. Often not even winners. Use it to save your lives or escape from dreadful situations, or use it perhaps in a rare case to secure a precious artefact. But never use it lightly. Now, I won't judge you, as I've been known to throw a unnecessary punch myself in my younger days..." this remark made Bia's right eyebrow lift. "...but on a day such as this we should send a message to the world that peace is something worth striving for. And it's worth making our individual lives harder or even to change our ways entirely. I ask you all to find your other strengths. Do yourself and the Society proud, and choose the challenging path of peace.

The Rules
- Your crew needs to consist of solely Aggressive characters (list below)
- You can pick your own captain
- You need to end with a Friendly reputation of level 3 (means at least 3 expeditions need to be finished Friendly)

- Your score is your Renown.
- Play on Adventure Mode.
- Play on any Difficulty.

Aggressive characters, compose your crew from these. (roughly those who add the most to the Aggressive attitude icon during crew selection)

Code: Select all

The Goals
BRONZE: 2000 Renown (1 Medal Points*)

** The platinum medal is extraordinary and can only be achieved on Classic or Impossible difficulty without losing. It doesn't increase Medal Points, but we will track how many you have.

How exactly is expedition reputation determined? For example, I just did Saxon Kings, four encounters, two were completed Friendly (with one aggressive attack used between the two of them), two were completed Aggressive, one with about half the attacks being Friendly and the other 100% Aggressive. The boss fight was one of the Friendly encounters. Yet the expedition came out Aggressive overall. Why is that?

It's not critical yet, but I can only afford for this to happen once more before the run is disqualified...

How exactly is it possible to tell from the win screen how many expeditions were completed with a given attitude, though?

(I just finished my first full run, following a couple failed attempts. Went Hatice-Bia-Earl, which was weirdly similar to my Bia-Earl-Molly crew from last week... but of course they play rather differently. I finished all 5 expeditions friendly, and when the dust had settled, I had... exactly 6995 points.

Good thing I enjoy playing this game.)

It's the icon on the left side of the victory screen. Also under the Playstyle column on the Leaderboard screen, if you have to screenshot it that way. I'm not entirely sure what it would show if you end up not-Friendly in the last expedition - say if you have a sequence of Aggressive-Friendly-Friendly-Friendly-Aggressive for the five expeditions. To be safe it might be worth an extra screenshot as soon as you get the Friendly III icon at the end of expedition 4 in that scenario.

Ha, I feel your pain. Just finished a Dolores-JP-Molly run and came up 42 renown shy of Gold. May try again later so holding off posting the screenshot for now.

Been playing this game for a long time now and still don't understand how people so easily get Platinum scores. I've never done it (though I consistently get gold). Would love to watch a Liort of Yo playthrough to see what I'm missing :)

Well, a dozen or so attempts later, I finally made it to platinum. Loaded up Dolores and had her carry us through.

(And there I was, thinking that missing out on the Chiwara was my doom... but a bunch of other rolls had gone really well, and the Star of Africa was a huge bonus. Turns out +2 collect on friendly victories was enough.

I'm starting to think that's a lot of the answer, right there. :-) Getting all the RNG aspects of the game to come out just right makes a big difference. Princeza would have added 650 to my score; the Star would have added approximately 1100; Princeza + Star would have added just under 2000. So not quite enough for platinum even with two big changes. It was probably a lackluster Hungary expedition that did me in. And/or some specialists that weren't available - Chairman Pinkerton was not in Stockholm this game, for example. And there's the issue of guessing wrong for the final bonus multipliers - had Princeza been there, I think Balanced was the right call, but without her I should have picked Status. No way to know which to choose at the time though.

This Dolores only succeeded at 36 spins - rather a lot less than the 49 she made last time I used her. What a difference Professor Proskiurakova makes! :-)

Husborf, that's an amazingly good game there. People don't normally do 1-2-3-4-5 runs with Dolores, and generally do Mali last in collect-token runs hoping to get the Star when it really counts. Any tips, tricks, or important lucky breaks you got would be good to know for the rest of us! Did you manage to get Mind Analysis, Apparatus Artists, and rank 4 Quick Thinker, rank 3 Engineer, and rank 3 Rogue by the start of expedition 3? (If so, how?!) I tend to think of Highlands as a place to go for a Secrets-oriented group, anyway.

Well I failed the 80% roll for the Shambala Key: Strength treasure, missed the Crystal on Emerged Island, and made a couple mistakes in choosing non-optimal treasure rewards, which may have prevented me from reaching my first Platinum, but still managed a personal high score that's good enough for gold.

Results are up!

I should also inform you that the Weekly Challenge is moving to a new phase in which the community is running. This is something set in motion last week with this post of mine. I regret that I didn't repost it here. It basically means a few people from the community will start running these, initially with me gazing over their shoulders. There's still room for people that want to help, so everyone here's welcome. They do the planning in a Steam group though, which makes things a bit harder. Still, please give feedback on the situation if you have it, so that we can include it in the process!
