Challenge #54: Cut Short
Concept and Structure: Liort
Story/Sounding board for ideas: Blackvision

Hildegard frowned, looking up at the Renowned Explorers Leaderboards. She glared at the top scores. She was growing to hate seeing certain names always being above her own. She pursed her lips, considering. This year there would be a difference! But- how? Anna, Charles and Dolores always had obscenely high scores - she couldn't even keep up.

Then she considered the rules and regulations with a thoughtful eye. Glancing around, she pulled out a pencil and made a quick alteration to one. There! That would do it!

She turned, removing her hat to check on Mr Snuffles, the rabbit, and winked at him. 'That'll cut them short!' she smirked.

'Auww, he's so cute!' Starting guiltily, Hildegard looked round as Emilia came up. Emilia smiled and leaned down to look at Mr Snuffles briefly before glancing up to the board. 'Oh! Is that another alteration?' she queried.

Hildegard paused, then nodded confidently, putting all her effort into it. 'That's right! The Chairman just passed by and said he'd have to hold it earlier this year...'

'Oh, goodness! I'd better let Charles know - he's left already - he'll never find out in time!'

Hildegard shook her head hurriedly, placing Mr Snuffles - and the hat - back in position. 'Oh, no! Erm. I sent a seagull message out for him - and Anna and everyone who's gone off so quickly - they'll all know about it already! But- aren't you going with one of them?'

Emilia hesitated, but cleared her throat. 'Uhm. No - I asked Anna, but she said something about me being too over-qualified...' she trailed off as they saw Earl approaching. Earl was fiddling with a device that was attached to- well. The
remains of a coconut - if one could call it a coconut when it mostly seemed to be made out of charcoal and blackened shell.

He gave them a gloomy look. 'Pinkerton told me to get out and join a team. Said I'd get no more Explorer funding if I didn't go on an expedition with someone this year.

Hildegard brightened considerably. 'Why don't you two come with me! Then we can do a short trip and get back for the early ceremonies this year - we're sure to make 1st place!'

They both brightened at this idea, and Earl checked the (amended) date of the ceremony- just to make sure - before agreeing happily.

They walked out, Hildegard beaming at her own ingeniousness, just as Harry sneaked in on the opposite side of the hall. He chuckled, having heard the whole conversation - and seen the adaptation Hildegard had made to the regulations from the shadows.

He glanced round, spotting Jan-Piet approaching with Phillipe, regaling one another with their latest tricks. He winked at them, and told the tale.

Jan-Piet looked at the board, then gave an evil grin. 'Well, the big-shots have already left. Why don't we make this date more- plausible!' He looked at Harry. 'How's your signatures?'

Harry raised an eyebrow. 'Whose?'

'Lady Vaduva's. Pinkerton's not about to argue with her about amendments like that, and she's away for a month in the Caribbean - plenty of time for everyone else to have cleared off.'

Harry chortled and leaned in, quickly forging a signature next to Hildegard's alteration to make it official. Phillipe examined his handiwork. 'You know, you could sign a few of Earl's experiments off in Anna's name-' But Jan-Piet cut him off.

'Forget that! This is our big chance - with the big guns out of the picture, we're only competing against the gullible duo and Hildegard - This is our chance to make a real name for ourselves! Come on, let's make sure we're back in time!' Harry chuckled and Phillipe's eyes sparkled with glee. Hildegard wouldn't be expecting any competition for her early event, and between them, they'd be more than a match for her haphazard team!

  • Only take part in 4 expeditions, then screenshot your world map screen with the options open (to display your difficulty and mode)
  • Pick either team Hildegard: Hildegard as captain, Emilia and Earl; OR team Jan-Piet: Jan-Piet as captain, Harry and Phillipe
  • You may not pick the Caribbean as one of your expeditions.
  • You must play on Adventure mode.

Your score is your total renown after completing 4 expeditions. You are allowed to spend insight etc before submitting the score.
  • BRONZE: 1800(1MP*)
  • SILVER: 2500(2MP*)
  • GOLD: 5200(3MP*)
  • PLATINUM: 7000(3MP+**)
* Number of medal points awarded when playing on Classic Difficulty. Easy and Normal give less, according to these rules.
** The platinum medal is extraordinary and can only be achieved on Classic or Impossible difficulty without losing. It doesn't increase Medal Points further than a Gold medal, but we will track how many you have.

Remember to open the options when taking your screenshot of the world map - without it we can't verify the difficulty and mode you are playing in.

Story ideas: Will these tricks end up coming back to bite Jan-Piet and Hildegard? What other tomfoolery may occur between the two teams in their short trips? Will the official date be changed again or will Anna, Charles and Kwame come back to find everyone's forgotten about them in the (early) celebration for the Top Explorer of the Year?
