Challenge #59:Against The Grain
Author: Blackvision

Chairman Pinkerton moved along the hallway, approaching the room of the fabled board of Renowned Explorers, with Ivan companionably by his side. The Chairman sighed as a crash sounded in the room. Another argument.

Ivan frowned through his beard and glanced to the chairman. On his nod, the large man put both hands to the doors and threw them wide-open with a thunderous noise, silencing everyone else in the room.

The Chairman took advantage of this moment, savouring the frozen expressions on those within. He let his eyes run over Anna - taser raised, threatenly - and Hatice, - who had a hand on her arrows - and settled on Charles. Perhaps the only one looking completely innocent despite being in the centre of the pandemonium - if you ignored how his glove's imprint was firmly showing on Hatice's cheek. Most of the Explorers were there, either eyeball-to-eyeball mid-argument or reaching for weapons. Or crouched behind cover.

There was a certain degree of shuffling as everyone pretended they hadn't, in fact, been fighting, weapons vanishing in an instant.

The chairman ignored them for now, walking through the throng up to the board. He cast his eyes over it and the prospective top entries for this year's contest and pursed his lips. 'I suppose you want me to pick who's the best of you, then?'

Those considering themselves eligable promptly moved forwards, but Pinkerton held up a hand.

'No, I think after that display, there had better be a new requirement for this year. You have to prove yourselves as better Explorers - people to look up to, people who can honestly say they've worked their hardest to achieve the title. This year, it will be someone who can go against their own natural instincts who'll earn the prize!'

He cast an eye over the nearest Explorers. 'Anna - how far can you go without science? Hatice - work for something other than gold in your endevours! Charles - can you find success without fame?'

They looked at one another uncertainly, but Pinkerton wasn't in a charitable mood for questions. 'There's still time if you hurry - and anyone failing to come back without sticking to those rules
might be facing a ban until they've covered the costs of this!' He indicated the wreckage in the room with a slow sweep of his hand.

By the time he lowered his arm, they were racing out of the door, conscious of the time limit, and well-aware that Pinkerton over-estimated value in terms of lost property. Pinkerton looked at Ivan. 'Well now, I dare say this year's competition should be entertaining!'

  • Choose one of: Hatice, Anna or Charles as your captain.
  • You must play on Adventure mode.
  • You may pick any Greedy, Fame-Seeking or Obsessively Curious crew that match your Captain:
Greedy: Hatice, Earl
Fame-Seeking: Charles, Maria
Obsessively Curious: Anna, Hildegard
[*] Get a high renown without using Gold/Status/Research as your main resource.

(You may take any of the three in bold as your captain. Any other crew members are allowed except for those mentioned above unless mentioned alongside your captain. Eg. If you've chosen Anna as captain, you may not have Hatice, Earl, Charles or Maria in your team, but anyone else - including Hildegard - is fine; while Charles cannot have Hildegard, Anna, Earl or Hatice but can take Maria.)

Your score is your total renown plus your highest renown-earning resource's renown value. However, if your highest resource is your leader's preferred one: Gold for Greedy (Hatice), Status for Fame-Seeking (Charles) or Research for Obsessively Curious (Anna), then your score is your renown minus your main resource's renown earnings.

Make sure you mouse-over your highest renown-earning resource on your win screen when taking the screenshot and position the mouse to ensure that the pop-up doesn't cover your title (as this shows which resource is your main one)
  • BRONZE: 5000(1MP*)
  • SILVER: 9000 (2MP*)
  • GOLD: 19000 (3MP*)
  • PLATINUM: 22000 (3MP+**)
* Number of medal points awarded when playing on Classic Difficulty. Easy and Normal give less, according to these rules.
** The platinum medal is extraordinary and can only be achieved on Classic or Impossible difficulty without losing. It doesn't increase Medal Points further than a Gold medal, but we will track how many you have.
