Challenge #29: Learn & Live

Post by Manuel » Thu Jun 16, 2016 12:44 pm

Welcome to Challenge #29. The rankings, stories and statistics for the previous challenge can be found here

The Story
Hatice tried to explain it to Kwame, but with all his good will he didn't understand. "I think that as a scout, you see, I have the obligation to touch nature and all its inhabitants as little as I can without endangering my survival. You understand, right?". Kwame just tilted his head, thinking of all his new friends' hearts he had touched. Philippe had overheard Hatice's remark and dropped in the conversation. "That's a fine point you make, Hatice. I've always felt that some explorers try to change the world they explore too much, but the true goal of discovery is to see the world for what it was without you, to not influence and still learn." "Yes" said Hatice. "Just learn and live..."

This challenge may feel familiar, as it's the complement of challenge #27, two weeks back, when we had the Swords and Words challenge.

The Rules
- Pick only Scientists and Scouts
- Pick at least one Scientist
- Pick at least one Scout
- As a special rule, a team composed of Emilia, Harry and Pedrinho is banned, as this is a team from the previous challenge. You're encouraged to play a new game for the weekly challenge.

- Your score is your Renown.
- Play on Adventure Mode.
- Play on any Difficulty.

The Goals
BRONZE: 1,500 Renown (1 Medal Points*)
SILVER: 4,500 Renown (2 MP*)
GOLD: 7,500 Renown (3 MP*)
PLATINUM: 9,500 Renown**
* Number of medal points awarded when playing on Classic Difficulty. Easy and Normal give less, according to these rules.
** The platinum medal is extraordinary and can only be achieved on Classic or Impossible difficulty. It doesn't increase Medal Points, but we will track how many you have.

STORY MEDAL: Why would a crew decide to leave behind all Speakers and Fighters? Does this give the crew certain strengths or flaws that respectively help or punish them on expeditions? Is there a struggle between the Scouts and Scientists or do they jell well?

We're keeping track of all the medals you gained in the Hall of Fame.

First attempt. Okay but a bit of mishaps and misplanning the research really did me in...

Pretty decent run, no real disasters....I still have no idea what I should be doing to double my score like some of the other high scores that are posted.

Definitely NOT the first attempt. Need the +2 study per engineer level after each expedition and will-o-the-wisp to get going. A few lucky wheel spins on level 2, but then you have a rampaging horde of engineers, Anna teaching more engineer perks each level, and 2 campfire cards that give a ton of tokens per engineer level in the team. Got an unexpected bonus having Hattice in Egypt (I'll say no more). Everything snowballs. Last level was effortless!

Is it considered lame to use Anna as captain?

Anna is one of the easier captains to reach crazy scores with, but the others are definitely still viable. I'm seeing a lot of crazy scores on the steam forums this week, using a lot of different captains. Personal stories have also changed a lot in what captains are best - the jury's still out on that.

I personally just do one run and leave it at that - but that doesn't mean the score of anyone who uses multiple attempts is less valid!

Here's mine for this week - just shy of Gold unfortunately. Made a few mistakes in Specialist management that might have made the difference, as well as getting the wrong treasure bonus on the Emerged Island crystal, getting the wrong bonus from the Voodoo Queen, and failing my Naturalist roll on the final boss encounter.

I've certainly 'learned' a lot this time. :P

I read about things like Will O The Wisp and Pumpkin King...what are these? I've never encountered them yet I feel like I've played this game fairly exhaustively.
