Challenge #44: Community is King

Post by Manuel » Thu Sep 29, 2016 1:59 pm

Next week the first community-run challenge will start. To honour that I thought I take community itself as an inspiration. This one's to you!

"Ladies and gentlemen of this fine society" the chairman started. "I'm very proud to have gathered such fine talent in this place." At that remark Ivan put his fingers together and Yvonne brushed off her shoulder. "but I want all of you to realize that we wouldn't be anywhere without our teams, without our helpers from all over the world, the experts who so generously dedicate theirselves to helping our adventures. We wouldn't be anywhere without our community." It was silent for a bit when even Charles and Anna were realizing that they could indeed not even hope to achieve fame with just their crew.

"On your next expeditions, I implore you to put forward your entourage, as they are the key to success!"

The Rules
- You can decide on your crew all by yourself
- Your base score is your Renown
- Your score is increased by gathering specialists, according to a formula described below. To make it easy there is a table below. You can read it like this: If you manage to collect 12 specialists at the end, you'll get 1820 extra Renown. A 13th would have granted you 455 Renown extra for a total bonus of 2275.

# - Renown per specialist - Cumulative Renown
1 - 5 - 5
2 - 15 - 20
3 - 30 - 50
4 - 50 - 100
5 - 75 - 175
6 - 105 - 280
7 - 140 - 420
8 - 180 - 600
9 - 225 - 825
10 - 275 - 1100
11 - 330 - 1430
12 - 390 - 1820
13 - 455 - 2275
14 - 525 - 2800
15 - 600 - 3400
16 - 680 - 4080
17 - 765 - 4845
18 - 855 - 5700
19 - 950 - 6650
20 - 1050 - 7700
(Every new specialist is worth 5 times it's rank + the value of the previous one)

- Play on Adventure Mode.
- Play on any Difficulty.

The Goals
BRONZE: 2500 Renown (1 Medal Points*)
SILVER: 8000 Renown (2 MP*)
GOLD: 11500 Renown (3 MP*)
PLATINUM: 18000 Renown**
* Number of medal points awarded when playing on Classic Difficulty. Easy and Normal give less, according to these rules.
** The platinum medal is extraordinary and can only be achieved on Classic or Impossible difficulty without losing. It doesn't increase Medal Points, but we will track how many you have.

STORY MEDAL: How will all these specialists fit on a blimp? Will new relationships arise between crewmembers and specialists? What will they achieve with all of them?

We're keeping track of all the medals you gained in the Hall of Fame.

How to participate
You can participate with a highscore, a story or both.

  • Write a story. Use the Challenge theme as an inspiration by looking at the constraints. Find other stories in the Fan Story directory or by looking at previous challenges.
  • Post your story in a new topic in these forums.
  • Link to it here with a comment.
  • Include the first paragraph/few lines of your story in the post to show readers what your story is about.
  • Play the game according to the challenge rules.
  • Post in this topic screenshots of all your entourage especialists by opening your entourage screen in the win screen*, as well as your Win Screen itself, right after the ceremony.
  • Submit by Wednesday, October 5th, 12:00 noon CEST / 05:00 CT. (Check your timezone here)
*If you forget this, you can still submit your score, but I won't add Renown for specialists.

A bit of research in preparation: the characters who can adopt the dog on Lost Island are Harry and Jan-Piet according to the "Personality Traits" thread on Steam, or just Harry according to the wiki.

The only other recruitable specialist I'm aware of is Count Dracul, which means that the maximum number of specialists is 17. The wiki agrees with that value as well. On the other hand Manuel listed the table down to 20 specialists, so I wonder if we're missing something?

Also, while trying to find that Personality Traits thread I came across this: ... 482305963/
Well done Abbey, very well done!

Took many tries to finish this challenge. Was trying to do the challenge with Charles, Maria and Victor but they kept dying on Shangri-La so I switched up my crew and ran w/ the same one everyone else used :p

Only had 3 renown heading into the final expedition, along with 'Master' tier gear so didn't feel confident enough to tackle either of the 5-star expeditions. Likely hurt my score but at least I managed to finish the challenge.

Score = 10209 renown + 4080 (16 specialists) = 14,289 final score. Solid gold.

8910+4080=12990, Gold.
I don't see how Platinum is possible, though no doubt the experts over on Steam will get some. Technically this isn't even my best submission, since my Challenge 40 run was 13039 not counting renown-per-specialist since I didn't screenshot that for obvious reasons. :-) But even if I'd repeated that and had 16 specialists (the Ch. 40 game had 11 or 12), that's 1k short of Platinum...

This game resulted in a surprisingly decent score, considering that I felt like I was doing terribly throughout. Should have had about 200 more renown - a bad extra mouse click during the Anthropology research mistakenly opened Engineering, leaving me one paper short of completing Anthropology before the next expedition. :P

I still don't really feel like I understand how to run a good high scoring campaign token team. Couldn't get the perks or the research in time to try to rack up secrets in the Highlands. Gold was rather lacking throughout; I think I had the bare minimum gear to survive the demon fights without losing resolve. Could certainly have used more research to get papers in the History tree, too.

Was Rivaleux nerfed a bit when Shangri-la was revamped? The only real difference I noticed was that the final fight went much more smoothly than usual, and I think this team was somewhat less capable than the others I've taken to Shangri-la. Definitely the least-supplied - had to beeline the three keys and go straight to the end, and still had three hunger penalties.

Results are here! And the new, first community-created, challenge is posted as well. It should be posted here soon as well.

I don't think Rivaleux was nerfed in any of the latest patches. You can find patch notes here

Looking at the Steam thread, apparently Pachacuti can be acquired by a rank 4 diplomat in the Andes, and Vigilante can be acquired in some manner in Mali. Could anyone offer more details? What node or encounter does Pachacuti appear in? What are the prerequisites to get Vigilante? I think I have seen his encounter once or twice, but obviously didn't meet the prereqs and didn't realize he could actually join one's entourage that way.
