Challenge #23: Civilization

Post by Manuel » Wed May 11, 2016 6:48 pm

Today something important happened in the view of many strategy gamers. It's got something to do with an important inspiration for Renowned Explorers, and I'm sure you can figure it out if you just read on ;)

Looking for your results in the previous challenge? Check here

The Story
Agatha cleared her throat and started speaking. "Ladies and gentlemen, being the esteemed explorers you all are, I am sure you have no need for a course on history. You all have traveled and have seen civilization in its many incarnations. For those who judge, it may be apparent that some are better than others, whilst I myself enjoy learning more about each and everyone. Of course there are many ways to appreciate civilization..." she moved her gaze across the room to where Emilia stood. " study it, you need a certain approach. Those of you that practice Archaeology will have touched on the very fabric of civilization, unearthing remains of past greatness. Then there are Diplomats..." Agatha looked at Victor. "... these well-mannered people not only embody civilization, but also bring it about in others. But of course there are endless ways to participate in this remarkable concept, as it includes each and every person on this earth." Agatha stepped away from the lectern and kept a few seconds of silence. "Explorers, I think it's time to show the world that this Society represents the very thing I talk about today. I nominate three excellent captains, who each are responsible for elevating a certain attitude to civilized standards. Victor, Emilia and Yvonne. You shall venture forth, explore history and celebrate civilization!"

The Rules
Pick your captain among Victor, Emilia and Yvonne, then finish a game in which you unlock the History research tree in its entirety, and unlock no researches from the Observations tree.

- Pick your captain among Victor, Emilia and Yvonne.
- Pick a natural Archaeologist as your 2nd crewmember.*
- Pick a natural Diplomat as your 3rd crewmember.*
- Complete the History research tree.
- Don't pick any researches from the Observations tree.
* a natural for a perk is someone who can gain that perk by leveling.

- Make sure to screenshot your Research tree as said in the submission rules.
- Your score is your Renown.
- Play on Adventure Mode.
- Play on any Difficulty.

The Goals
BRONZE: 1500 Renown (1 Medal Points*)
SILVER: 4000 Renown (2 MP*)
GOLD: 7000 Renown (3 MP*)
PLATINUM: 9000 Renown**
* Number of medal points awarded when playing on Classic Difficulty. Easy and Normal give less, according to these rules.
** The platinum medal is extraordinary and can only be achieved on Classic or Impossible difficulty. It doesn't increase Medal Points, but we will track how many you have.

STORY MEDAL: In what way do Victor, Emilia and Yvonne promote civilization? Do they have the required qualities? Or is all of this just rhetoric by Agatha to praise the Society? Perhaps then the Explorers should learn what civilization actually means. What role does history play in all of this? And Archaeology and Diplomacy? Draw inspiration from this challenge's constraints to write your story.

We're keeping track of all the medals you gained in the Hall of Fame.

First entry!

And silver, too, which is above my expectations - didn't expect to even make the end at some points. :)

Probably not going to have time for a real submission this week, but I did write a very quick story on the subject. Call it... ahem, inspired, by the fact that I'm a moderator on one of the larger Civilization communities. It's been a rough week.

Here's the link to the story submission. I could also post it here too, if it's better. Not sure how to do stories on this forum :p

Preview, starting a couple paragraphs into the story:

"Civilization. What is it, and how do we define it? Is our progress the result of it, or is the very concept an illusion created by our p-- Yes?" Agatha asked, no longer able to ignore the incessant whispering and frantic waves from someone sitting in the front row.

"Ah, yes! Excuse me, but I can't help but notice your board. Is that actually what you intend to present to us?"

"The contents of the board will be discussed in due time," Agatha snapped, annoyed at the intrusion. People never would've acted like this back in her day. No, back in those days people had manners. "If you could all please hold your questions until the end, we will--"

"Yes yes, but," the boorish man continued. "The graphics. What on earth has happened to the graphics?"

"You mean the illustrations?" Agatha asked, her fingernails biting into her palms as she spoke.

"Yes, whatever. Don't they look a bit... I don't know, different?"
